Walmart to invest more than MXN 4 billion in the State of Mexico and automate logistics center with AI

Walmart Mexico and Central America announced an investment of more than MXN 4 billion in the State of Mexico, as part of its logistics and commercial expansion strategy in the state. The project includes the creation of around 500 direct jobs.
The investment includes a new stage of automation at its e-commerce distribution center located in Tepotzotlán, where the company incorporated systems based on artificial intelligence and robotics to increase operating capacity and handle up to 42,000 orders per day.
During the announcement, Cristian Barrientos, President and CEO of Walmart Mexico and Central America, said this investment reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the country and particularly to the State of Mexico. He added that it will allow the company to transform its supply chain to support operational growth.
The executive highlighted that the modernization of the logistics center is part of Walmart’s technological evolution in the country, in response to the growth of e-commerce and the demand for faster and more efficient deliveries.
Walmart accelerates logistics automation in Tepotzotlán
In addition to its logistics expansion, Walmart plans to open 18 new stores in different municipalities across the State of Mexico between 2026 and 2027. The company currently operates more than 400 units in more than 80 municipalities in the state, where it generates nearly 33,000 jobs.
The project reinforces the relevance of the State of Mexico within the company’s national logistics network, due to its connectivity and proximity to the country’s main consumer centers.
State of Mexico strengthens growth of the logistics sector
During the event, state authorities indicated that the logistics sector grew 12.8% in the state during 2024, above the national average. They also noted that the State of Mexico is home to 2,945 economic units related to logistics and distribution, a sector that employs more than 716,000 people.
