Experts who are part of the Otay II port project were invited to the meeting of members of the Foreign Trade and Logistics Committee of the Association of the Maquiladora and Export Industry (index) Zona Costa BC , who highlighted the importance of this new border port.

The speakers were Ing. Mario Orso, director of Intermodal Projects of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), District 11 , and his counterpart in Mexico, Ing. Erika García, director of Intermodal Projects of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).

In his speech, Mario Orso mentioned that 600 million dollars have been committed on the North American side , although the total project will cost 1,000 million dollars.

He explained that 51% of the budget comes from federal funds, 40% from state funds and 9% from local funds.

In addition, he commented that the estimated completion date of the work is at the end of 2024.

In this sense, he indicated that in order to carry out the project, it was agreed by the governments on both sides of the border that it would not begin until the access routes to the entrance gates were advanced, as well as the infrastructure of road connection.

Mario Orso stressed that they are currently working on the documentation for the construction of the port of entry, with smart technology, since without it the project will not be successful.

Likewise, he stressed that the measurement of waiting times is essential on both sides of the border.

For her part, Eng. Erika García argued that the border port will have an expansion of 31 hectares , which is why today the release of the right of way is already being developed, both for the road and the border port.

He reported that work is being done with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for the supply of electricity, and that considerable progress has been made to relocate the high-voltage towers where the road passes.

This project, he said, will undoubtedly bring great benefits to foreign trade in the Baja California coastal area , while endorsing the commitment of both governments to work together, making this region one of the most important in the world.
