The partnerships forged by the McAllen Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) with organizations and institutions in South Texas and Mexico have been instrumental in driving investments and job creation. Since its establishment in 1988, MEDC has played a pivotal role in attracting 726 companies to the region and facilitating the expansion of another 866 enterprises. Ralph Garcia, Vice President of International Business Recruitment, also highlighted the creation of over 244,000 formal jobs and the absorption of 57 million square feet of space during this period. "In the city of McAllen, we recognize the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve economic development goals. These organizations from both the Mexican and South Texas sides have greatly supported us in attracting investments, creating jobs, and fostering trade. We are more than just partners; we have a relationship that has led to cross-border success."
On the Mexican side, the Export Manufacturing Association (Index), representing Reynosa, Tamaulipas—a city bordering McAllen, Texas—is one of the key partners. Additionally, the Binational Council for Economic Development of Reynosa (Cobifer) actively engages in meetings and collaborative initiatives with MEDC. Meanwhile, in South Texas, alliances with the South Texas Economic Progress Council (Costep) have been strengthened, along with fostering relationships with other cities in the region. This is alongside partnerships with the Rio Grande Valley Partnership (RGV Partnership), the South Texas Manufacturers Association (STMA), and the Prosperity Task Force of Hidalgo County.
However, MEDC's collaboration extends beyond these organizations, with robust relationships established with various chambers of commerce, agencies, universities, and academic institutions—all working towards the shared objective of driving binational economic growth.
Garcia's message was part of a recent presentation to strategic location consultants in the city of Pharr, facilitated through a familiarization tour organized by Costep. He also highlighted the presence of industrial parks and their growth as integral components of binational development. He emphasized three recent developments: the McAllen Nearshoring Industrial Park with 120 acres, McAllen South Industrial Park with 120 acres, and Tres Lagos Industrial Development with 90 acres. "The collective efforts across the region to attract investments and jobs are evident in the growth that McAllen has experienced in recent years, and this growth trajectory is expected to continue into the future," Garcia concluded.
