South Korean industrial conglomerate HS Hyosung has announced plans to establish a new advanced materials manufacturing base in San Luis Potosí. The expansion, set to deploy in phases beginning in 2027, aims to scale production capacity and bolster supply chains across North America and global markets.

The project was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on September 25 during the Korea-Mexico Business Forum in Mexico City, held in conjunction with a bilateral economic trade delegation.

Strategic Platform Connecting North America to Global Markets

Rather than serving as a basic assembly plant, the upcoming facility is designed to act as a core strategic nexus within HS Hyosung’s international manufacturing network.

"This investment is a strategy to develop Mexico not merely as a production base, but as a key platform connecting North America with global markets," stated Sung Nak-yang, CEO of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials.

The company plans to foster local supplier development, integrate regional value chains, and generate skilled technical employment as operations scale in San Luis Potosí.

Expanding Automotive and High-Tech Material Capabilities

HS Hyosung Advanced Materials is a world leader in specialized high-performance materials for mobility, energy, aerospace, and defense sectors:

  • Global Market Leadership: The company holds the No. 1 global market share in PET tire cord and seatbelt industrial fibers.
  • Core Product Portfolio: High-tenacity technical fibers, aramid, carbon fiber, airbag fabrics, seatbelt materials, and tire reinforcement cords.
  • Regional Operations: HS Hyosung already supplies major OEMs—such as General Motors—with airbag fabrics and interior automotive components from facilities in Torreón, Coahuila, and Ensenada, Baja California, alongside manufacturing sites in the United States.

By anchoring its next phase of advanced material production in San Luis Potosí, HS Hyosung reinforces Central Mexico's position as a major strategic hub for high-value automotive and industrial supply chains.
