French construction materials giant Soprema has laid the foundation for a long-range industrial and innovation hub in San Miguel de Allende. Backed by an estimated $300 million multi-phase investment, the century-old global company aims to establish a manufacturing, technological, and R&D platform in Mexico designed to supply the domestic market while expanding its footprint across North and Latin America.
The project is expected to create approximately 250 direct jobs as it evolves into a full-scale industrial campus.
Strategic Geopolitics and Domestic Demand Drive Expansion
According to Igor Mariazzotti, General Director of Soprema Mexico, the decision to launch operations in the country stems from strong internal market demand, nearshoring supply chain shifts, and Mexico’s evolving role in global trade dynamics.
"The group was very clear that Mexico was an essential destination," Mariazzotti highlighted. "In the new geopolitical balance, we have identified incredible potential in Mexico. Today, it represents a highly attractive destination for international investment, backed by strong domestic demand."
Infrastructure and Connectivity: Why PESMA Was Chosen
Soprema selected the Polígono Empresarial San Miguel de Allende (PESMA) after evaluating regional infrastructure, energy availability, logistics capabilities, and strategic land options.
Key advantages of the location include:
- Industrial Facilities: First-rate utility services and plug-and-play energy infrastructure tailored for heavy industry.
- Strategic Logistics: Direct access to major transport corridors connecting Querétaro, Central Mexico, the Bajío region, and Northern export routes.
- Continental Reach: Ideal positioning to serve domestic operations while exporting to North, Central, and South America.
Building an Ecosystem: Innovation, Talent, and Sustainability
Soprema’s long-term plan extends beyond traditional assembly and manufacturing, aiming to foster an integrated industrial ecosystem in Guanajuato centered on three core pillars: Applied R&D & Innovation, dedicated spaces to design, test, and manufacture building solutions locally for both Mexican and international markets; Academic & Talent Integration, with an early-stage partnerships with local universities to develop specialized technical curricula, training programs, and talent pipelines; and Sustainable Construction, focus onenergy-efficient building solutions and circular economy principles, utilizing recycled materials from other industries to lower environmental impact.
By combining advanced manufacturing, local supply chain integration, and regional research capabilities, Soprema’s new San Miguel de Allende campus positions Guanajuato as an emerging center for sustainable construction technologies in the Americas.
